How to Put Air into Words
Galeria Leme, São Paulo · curated by Diane Lima
The artist’s first solo show, at Galeria Leme (28 Nov – 12 Dec 2020), curated by Diane Lima: iron sculptures from the series Palavras de ferro e ar [Words of iron and air] and copper writings on canvas drawn from the artist’s “Collection of Notebooks”. The raw materials come from the working-class district of Uruguai, in Salvador’s Cidade Baixa, where Carapiá was born and raised, and from childhood memories of collecting and reselling copper.
“By opening the word, breaking, bending, making and remaking its lines, Rebeca Carapiá marks our time by writing other ways of speaking of difference without explaining it.” — Diane Lima
